Meaning of the word 'Hiraeth'
'Hiraeth' is an 'untranslatable' Welsh word whose closest English equivalent would be 'homesickness'. It conveys a deep longing for a home that perhaps never was.
About the Project
The Hiraeth Project aims to provide a platform of expression and a network of support for people who have experienced feelings of displacement, who may feel that their voices and experiences are sidelined and unheard. In the summer of 2019 the project will work with a group of unaccompanied asylum seeking teenagers in Cambridgeshire. Through a series of creative workshops running in conjunction with the recording of a radio programme/podcast, the project aims to be a space for free self-expression, self-narration, and self-curation; an opportunity for participants to offer alternatives to the narratives of victimhood that we often hear foisted upon refugees and asylum-seekers. It will aim to enable and facilitate discussion and sharing of experiences, thoughts, questions, and feelings around the themes of ‘home’ and ‘belonging’, while also providing an opportunity for participants to improve their confidence and proficiency in speaking English, develop practical skills, and foster greater integration into the Cambridgeshire community.
Get Involved!
We need volunteers to help facilitate workshops and podcast recordings on Tuesdays from 16 July 2019 to 13 August 2019. You don't necessarily need to be available for all 5 days, but priority will be given to applicants who can make the majority of the sessions, as building trust and relationships within the group will be an important part of the facilitator role.
We particularly welcome interest from applicants with:
- Language skills (particularly Arabic, Tingrinya, Pashto, or TEFL)
- Experience working with refugees, facilitating arts workshops or in radio/podcast production.
A training on workshop facilitation, participatory methods and child safeguarding will be held on July 10 at 4pm in the Cambridge Hub office on the 1st floor of 3 Laundress Lane. You will also be required to complete a DBS check and attend evaluation sessions before and after the project.
We will reimburse volunteer expenses, provide lunch on project days
